I am in shock. I have been a subscriber to both Netflix and Hulu since I purchased a Roku box, a network of streaming device used to connect to multiple streaming platforms in one place. Netflix has always had its perks because it hand-picks shows or movies that you are likely to be interested in based on what you have watched in the past, so you feel as if your wants and desires are being listened to on a regular basis.

With that being said, both Netflix and Hulu both have their own perks because there is content that is specific and exclusive to one option over the other. Along with that, Netflix has always been advertisement-free, while Hulu has provided subscriptions with what they consider “limited advertisements,” until now.

Hulu has released a new option that subscribers can upgrade to for $11.99 per month to become ad-free, which is 4$ more than the prior subscription. I think this is a very good idea on their part. Consumers pay for streaming services such as Hulu and Netflix to supplement or often replace their consumption of cable or satellite. Services like Tivo and DVR options have made advertisements obsolete in terms of numbers of viewers because people are opting to skip over them. It’s expected for streaming services like Netflix and Hulu to follow suit to keep up with the trend.

I think it’s a step forward for Hulu because as a company, they took the time to listen to and consider the feedback of their customers to better suit their needs, which sadly, many companies do not do. This option allows consumers that do not mind to pay a little more for their convenience a chance to do so without setting a higher standard for the general public. It gives their customers a choice. People like choices. Especially when it comes to money.
